Today is Tartan Day!

"Great health and a Happy Tartan Day to all!"

Many people of Scottish descent celebrate National Tartan Day on April 6th every year, and we join them in celebration this year, regardless of our backgrounds. Personally, I'm mostly Welsh and Cherokee.

This date is very special as it is the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath. The Declaration of Arbroath was a letter written in 1320 by the nobles of the Kingdom of Scotland, requesting that the Pope recognize Scotland's independence and acknowledge Robert the Bruce as the country's lawful king. The Declaration of Arbroath is also important in American history, as it provided the foundation and inspiration for the Declaration of Independence, which was later signed in America by the 13 United States on July 4, 1776, declaring the US free from British Rule. Americans are indebted to Scotland in many ways, and as Americans, we wish all Scotts a joyful and enthusiastic Tartan Day.

One of the best-known lines from the Declaration of Arbroath is:

May that same commitment to freedom be rekindled today against those who oppress us and deny us our freedom! As the enemy surrounds us, like the followers of Robert the Bruce and the signers of the Declaration of Arbroath, let us refuse to back down. Page 46 in our Songbook.

Standing firm is vitally important! AND, As we embrace the importance of being spiritually and materially flexible and balanced, we recognize the alternative is to be stubborn and unbalanced. An individual who is stubborn and unbalanced will not experience joy, inner peace, and spiritual victory, and will find constant conflict in their relationships with others. Balance is the key.

It's important to live in Balance with the earth and the times in which we live:

So, while the battle rages, stand firm! Do not back down from your ideals! And once the battle is over, continue moving forward towards the next change. Dwelling on the past blocks further progress, but, as is said, those who fail to remember the past's mistakes are condemned to repeat them. All people groups change from within or without. Time stands still for no one.

The Scotts have a noble history, whether in ancient times when they practiced their ancestral religions or since the 5th-7th centuries, since embracing Christianity. One of the most beloved Christian hymns, Amazing Grace, comes from a Scotsman. "Amazing Grace" was written in 1772 by John Newton, a former slave trader who later became an Anglican minister. It was first published in the Olney Hymns in 1779. The hymn's lyrics reflect Newton's personal journey of redemption and faith after a near-death experience at sea. "Amazing Grace" became an anthem for the American Civil Rights Movement and has been sung by numerous musicians and singers, including Elvis Presley, Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion, and Aretha Franklin. Its music reaches into our hearts with compassion for all. Allow this Scottish rendition to wash through you with love, repentance, and hope, and courage:

Early Scottish religion was polytheistic and animistic, centered on the worship of nature (i.e., theologically, it was Pagan or nature-centric) and its forces. There was also a strong focus on various deities, supernatural entities, and rituals tied to the seasons and agricultural cycles. The ancient Celts of Scotland revered nature, believing that a single Divine Spirit was present in natural phenomena such as trees, rivers, mountains, the sun, moon, and stars. They also believed in a pantheon of gods and goddesses, some with wider geographical distribution and others venerated only in specific regions or by particular tribes. The Scotts also believed in various other supernatural entities, including elves, trolls, gnomes, and dragons, as was common in Wales and throughout the Misty Isles prior to Christian invasion. Religiously and spiritually, they shared similarities with the Indian Sanatana Dharma, Native American tribal beliefs, Taoism, and other pre-Christian European traditions. Their priesthood included Druids and Wiccans, although specific information about them is less certain than in Wales, England, Ireland, and Gaul (present-day France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and parts of Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, and Northern Italy). They did not give up. They continued forward and must we. Forward toward a brighter future and eventual liberation.

One God, called by innumerable Names, has been here since before the beginning and will be here forever. Our understandings change. Sometimes we move forward and sometimes back, but God never changes. Know God!

God is Everywhere!

Between the third and fourth centuries, a new power emerged and swept much of the world. Roman Christianity conquered the Misty Isles, including Wales and Scotland. Traditional religions in the area made significant efforts to endure the onslaught, but ultimately, they were compelled to either convert or cease to exist. Most converted. The Old Religions effectively ceased to exist by the 15th century CE. Eventually, most folks adjusted to the changes, and Scottish faith continued in the new form but with strong ancient roots. Why? Because faith is not about dogma and external religion. The people believed in themselves and the God they knew within, and they adjusted. The outer forms shifted, but within the human heart, faith always seeks to survive. Religion today is fundamentally changing. Faith is under attack and being intentionally destroyed. Understandings such as Omnism can survive this storm as the world becomes too interconnected to continue in isolation. The people can unite in a common faith of Oneness. The one constant in life is change. Those who cannot change always fade away in the end.

Humanity must seek and find Truth within our hearts, not externally in creeds and dogmas. And yet we are social beings. Scottish history demonstrates that when people unite, they can survive anything! So, know yourself and share your light with the world around you. Use wisdom and discretion always. People may not understand you. They may reject the Truth as you know it to be. It has always been this way. But know that you are worthy of love and respect. Don't believe those who say otherwise. Often, the most externally religious people are the least spiritual. Not always of course, but far too often. Seek Love! Know Love! Be Love! Let's turn to Page 35 What You Say, by Kevin Winebarger

As the Irishman C.S. Lewis taught, "A concentrated mind and a sitting body make for better prayer than a kneeling body and a mind half asleep." Let's determine to awaken together to a brighter future!

Praises and Prayers to God.

We now invite those present in the Zoom room or on Rumble to share their brief prayers and praises. Speak directly to God or to our community, whatever is on your heart and mind.

May One God hear our prayers and respond favorably to us.
