Meet the Antichrist

Part Two

By John of AllFaith © 7.21.08

One year later all this literally came upon the king and he was driven insane and lost his kingdom. We read that at that time

The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?
31 While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee....
34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:
35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.
37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

With the higher understanding of this prophecy, we see that God does indeed establish the kingdom of his choice. It is this kingdom that Daniel saw previously where we read:

Daniel 2:44 And in the days of these kings [i.e. during the reign of the ten European leaders we spoke about above – compare 7:24-27] shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

These kings did not exist at the time of Daniel of course, and yet he saw them as the ten toes of the image and the ten horns of the fourth beast, the Roman Empire.

We see in the dream that the great tree of political Israel (Judah) was chopped down in 606 BCE by the command of King Nebuchadnezzar and the allowance of HaShem. Its roots were left in the ground and banded however so that in the future the bands could be removed and the tree could once again grow. The tree of Israel was thus banded and during the reigns of Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome and its offshoots the tree remained barren. Against all odds, the Jewish people did their best dispersed among the nations of the world. Against all odds the Jewish people survived and kept their culture and religion alive. Through the millennia, the God of Israel used his people to bless the world. Likewise, the Times of the Gentiles continued and the lesser antichrists of each generation sought to destroy Israel. Following the disappearance of Master Y'shua and the destruction of Jerusalem and its holy temple, these same forces went to work undermining the Jewish movement instigated by Master Y'shua. We'll discuss this more elsewhere. The point here is that these lesser antichrists had their agenda and God had his. This conflict of interests is the history of the world and it centers on the Jews and the God of Israel. Israel is the KEY.

We now return to Master Y'shua's Matthew 24 talk on the end of the Age.

1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to show him the buildings of the temple.
2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

Jesus had of course seen and visited the Temple of God many times. His disciples were asking him to explain a statement he had just made:

Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

Our modern Bible contains chapters and verses but we should bear in mind that these were added later on to make study and referencing specific sections easier. These added breaks should not affect one's understanding of the scriptures. The House of God, Herod's Temple, was the very heart of the Jewish faith and Master Y'shua's pronouncement was earth shaking. Y'shua's disciples hoped he was the Moshiach but the central role the Moshiach was to establish Israel and glorify Jerusalem, but now Y'shua predicted that the Holy City and even the Temple would soon be destroyed!

Jerusalem seemed to be impenetrable, it would never again fall, or so thought the people of the Holy City. Yet those who had come to believe in the message of the Master took his warning to heart.

Master Y'shua had been speaking critically with his disciples about the Scribes and the Pharisees. He was directly tying their religious failures to the coming destruction of the Temple they claimed to serve and his hearers wanted a fuller understanding of these things. Master Y'shua's charged that these leaders had forgotten the ways of their ancestors, that they were living and teaching in opposition to the Written Torah. The Scribes, he taught, were blindly following traditions and relying on external temple ritual while the Rabbis or Pharisees were placing greater authority on the Oral Torah (such as the Babylonian Talmud) than on the Written Torah (or "Old Testament"), hence in effect they had rejected the authority of Moses. This was damning accusation!

The news that the Holy Temple would be made desolate was shocking (23:37). The further realization that it would be destroyed was revolutionary (24:2). To first century Jews, life without the House of God was unthinkable and yet this was precisely what Master Y'shua foretold. This prophecy was literally fulfilled with the sacking of Jerusalem by Titus and his army in 70 CE. It appears that this news was so shocking that the disciples were left speechless and no follow-up questions were put forward at that time.

3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

What the Master told them was so shocking that they could scarcely believe their ears. Now they requested more information. It should be noted that while the Authorized King James Version of the Bible uses the phrase "end of the world" here, a better translation from the textus receptus would be "end of the age." In this teaching session the Master laid the future out for them in amazing detail.

This distinction between "world" and "age" is important for accuracy sake. The prophecies the Master makes in the following verses do not pertain to the end of the world but to the end of a global system of oppression, to the end of an age or era and the dawning of a better age.

First century Jews were painfully aware that their nation was an occupied Roman province and not a free country. They yearned for freedom. Many Jews, such as the Zealot party, actively sought Rome's overthrow while others, such as the Essene Brotherhood, sought to avoid the Romans and irreligious Jews by living in communal settings. The Scribes and the Pharisees (predecessors to the modern day rabbinical system) sought appeasement with Rome and largely supported the status quo. Regardless of their politics, all were painfully aware of the Roman presence and its impact on Judaism. The role of the promised Moshiach was political as well as spiritual liberation.

That the Times of the Gentiles (Luke 21:24) was still in effect was obvious to everyone and it was information about the end of this period or age of profanity that the disciples were asking about. When, they wanted to know, would the Moshiach finally come and put an end to Gentile reign? They wanted information about the promised Moshiach who would rid Israel of her occupiers and restore the nation to independence and its former glory.

4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

The destruction of the Temple would be the result of warfare. Y'shua's warned his hearers that they should brace themselves for hard times. It is here that we should consider the nature of prophetic scripture. Master Y'shua is here speaking to people in an out of the way place, and yet his words have been read by billions of people.

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

At this point the Master began describing events well into the future to the end of the age. We note here a reference to two major conflicts. 1) Nation shall rise against nation and 2) kingdom against kingdom. There isn't enough evidence to be dogmatic about this in my opinion, but personally I believe the Master here described the two world wars of the twentieth century.

While it could be that the first century followers of Master Y'shua believed they would witness the coming of the Moshiach and the end of the age, this is by no means certain. Y'shua's presentation in Matthew 24 directly contridicted the foreknown accomplishments of the Moshiach and the age he would usher in. Doubtless, they hoped to see that day of restoration, but the conditions laid out in these prophecies made it difficult to understand how they would have believed this, once they had came to understand what he had told them.

The timing for the fulfillment of these events was clearly not at hand because the conditions were not yet right for the Moshiach to arrive. Master Y'shua specifically warned his hearers that in the future many would come claiming to be the Moshiach, but they should not be deceived by their claims.

9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

Such persecution had been the situation of the Jews for generations. Here the Master is seeing far darker days still ahead for the Jews. He is describing the Russian pogroms, the Nazi Shoah and the other atrocities leveled against the Chosen People as time runs out on the Times of the Gentiles. Today anti-Semitism is again on the rise around the world among both liberals and conservatives and yet far more difficult days are ahead for the Jews and for all who will remain loyal to the god of Israel.

10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Here again we find support for this understanding, "he that survives to the end will be saved." This is a statement of the End Times persecution awaiting the Jews. This persecution will become so severe that only direct divine intervention will be able to halt this time of woe and save the Jews from complete annihilation.

14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Many Christians have cited these verses through the centuries to justify their missionary activities. They have said the gospel of the kingdom is the good news that Jesus is the messiah and that spiritual salvation through him is available. This popular interpretation does not fit with the context of these prophecies however. The good news of the kingdom is that Moshiach will come and restore the kingdom to Israel. The kingdom was taken away from Israel 600 years before and the Jews then living in the province of Judea were despised and abused by their Roman occupiers. The return of the kingdom to Israel would truly be good news. Master Y'shua's point here is that the Kingdom of HaShem will come to pass... but when?

He is discussing this topic in this chapter. Those who had hoped that Prophet Y'shua might be the moshiach wanted to know when the kingdom would be established as this is the primary thing the moshiach will accomplish for his people. But rather than announcing the establishment f the kingdom and the liberation of Israel, Master Y'shua warned of even more difficulties to come.

15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

These verses conform to the image set before us in the Books of Daniel and John's Revelation. Knowing that he was revealing things that would rock the world Daniel was deeply troubled and confused. He finally entered into a period of deep contemplation and prayer wherein he sought the will and knowledge of HaShem as to when the things he had seen would take place.

In chapter nine Daniel reveals part of what he learned from these sessions with God. He is told:

9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Master Y'shua warned that, "...When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet..." and so we know that this will be a specific event one could witness rather than metaphor or esoteric symbolism.
