This is a topic I often receive mail about, sometimes positive, more often negative. Rabbi Meir Kahane, of blessed and honored memory, was and remains a very controversial figure; reformers usually are. Rabbi Kahane correctly noted serious weaknesses within modern Judaism and Israeli politics. He felt that as a Jew and a rabbi it was his responsibility to address and seek to correct these errors. I respect that. AND sometimes the way he dealt with issues seems rather extreme to me as well. I believe most of his supporters would all agree with this. AND STILL sometimes extreme measures are needed! Had the Israeli government and citizens listened to him, history would have played out much different, much of our land would have been restored by now and our enemies would be afraid to attack us or o harm any of our people any where on earth. Unfortunately his wisdom was largely ignored.
In my opinion, the truth of Rav Kahane's warnings have been more than borne out since his murder on the 5 of November, 1990 (18 Cheshvan 5751). Perhaps a more balanced view was/is needed than his Kach and Kahane Chai, Jewish Defense League advocated, however his warnings should have been then, and should today, be taken very seriously. In my opinion, his is as vital a voice today as it was back when he was murdered by an Egyptian-born Al Qaeda terrorist in New York City.
